Monday Memories: The Fifth!

April 5th, 2009 · 19 Comments

Go and check out previous Monday Memories! The First, The Second, The Third and The Fourth!

I have been thinking about how much pets add to our lives.  They bring such great joy and happiness.  Okay, and some annoyance, too, but I think maybe less than the humans we deal with each day!

For my third birthday I got Muffin, my first pet, a sweet little furry bundle of poodle!  She had black, curly fur and a black nose, and she was the softest thing I had ever felt.  My mom, dad and I went over to my grandmother’s house to visit on my birthday.  There waiting for me was my Aunt Beth and my birthday surprise!  Muffin and I became instant friends and companions.  She played with me, she snuggled with me and she protected me.  I remember one time sitting on our living room couch and I was upset.  I’m sure Muffin sensed that I was upset and she hopped up to comfort me.  I told her that she was the only one that loved me and she licked me. Oh, to be loved by a dog!

Muffin lived to be quite old.  One day she became paralyzed and my mom and I brought her to our veterinarian.  The vet told us that it would be best to euthanize her.  We stayed with Muffin and we pet her and talked to her as she was given the injection.  Once she was gone, my mom and I literally ran out of the vet’s office crying…two grown women. Oh, to love a dog.

What are you remembering today?  If you have something to share with us today, leave a link to your blog post or photo in Mr. Linky.  If you don’t have a blog, tell us about a memory in the comment section.  I want to hear from everybody!  Please remember to:

  • Make sure your link works and that it goes to your specific memory post.
  • Put a link back to here in your post so that your readers can come and read about everyone’s memories!

Mornin’ Gayle. Thank you for this lovely opportunity. I don’t know why this has been so timely over the last couple of weeks but it’s comforting in a way.

Is that a pretend kitchen behind you in that one photo? Oh, I always wanted a pretend kitchen! Anyway, when I was little, I was VERY scared of dogs – even little dogs! I remember jumping on top of my friend’s brother’s car one time because their German Shepherd was after me, but to this day my friend tells me a cocker spaniel…..

such sweet old photos. there is something about pets that brings us so much comfort. I always thought it would be so exciting to be surprised by a new pet. In fact before I even read your post today that’s what I was remembering last night – the little bunny I surprised T with for Easter one year. I didn’t get my monday memories posted last night but will tonight.

People love their pets … I witness the love every day. To cry is human; to cry as adult is a beautiful expression of love.

I’m sending you to my flickr page today to see a photo of my childhood companion. I still love him!

    Happy Monday!

    Hi Maya!
I am lucky to have these photos. My mom gave some of them to me before she died and then my dad gave the rest to me after she died. As I’m sure you can tell, we love guinea pigs! My daughter’s guinea pig was a wonderful, sweet pet.

    Hi mrs. e!
    Thank you!

    Hi Puna!
Your post is so sad. I’m glad that you feel comforted for sharing it with us. Thank you.

    Hi Angela!
Yes! I loved that pretend kitchen! It is so hard when you have a fear of dogs. I’m glad you got over it!

    Hi spread your wings!
Awww, T must have been so excited to get a bunny on Easter! I’m looking forward to your post!

    Hi Shannon!
I would love to see photos of your little black puppy!

    Hi Lailani!
Heehee, maybe you can think up some other reason for wanting them!

    Hi elk!
It’s okay that you forgot. I’m just worried that one week I will forget! That would be embarrassing!

    Hi Shalet!
As a veterinarian, you must see a lot of people’s joy and heartbreak over their pets. I love the photo of you and your pooch!

I’m an only child that talked to my dog everyday when I was a little. He always listened to all my problems and was nice to hug. Dogs are amazing! We have two Shar-peis now, and they are wonderful!

I really enjoyed your post with the beautiful photos!

I hope your daughter is feeling better and better!

    Hi Kim!
Awww, that is sweet. I think a dog is even more special for only children like us! Thank you! My daughter is feeling better each day! Yay!

You made me think of my dog, Lans. My pet dog died in a city flood when I was about six years old. He was a full-blooded collie. He was so big and sweet.

I try not to talk about him because it was traumatic for me. But, he was such a loving and sweet friend. He used to push his body up against us in the direction he wanted to go in and that was usually in the kitchen for treats…. What a memory…
