Rainbow cookies!  These are so good.  They are expensive so we usually only buy them when somebody requests them for their birthday, and we get a small tin of them at Christmastime.  My teenaged son is in the midst of finals at school and he came food shopping with me yesterday.  He’s always saying, “I’m hungry.  There’s nothing to eat.”   I decided that he should pick out some food and this is one thing he picked.  I think working hard earns him (and the rest of us!) a cookie!

It’s cold outside, a rain and snow mix is forecast for tomorrow.  My husband has almost no work on his schedule.  So far we’re not planning a summer vacation, our pool is still a crumbling mess.  But, I have my old gardening books! I had a tiny little vegetable garden last year.  I would like to expand it this year and grow a little bit more.  I would also like to learn how to can vegetables.  My planning begins today!  I got these old gardening books out and left them on the coffee table in the living room this morning before I took my shower.  When I got out of the shower the first thing my youngest son said to me was, “We need to get some 2 year old asparagus roots.”  Even before he said good morning!  Another planner!

What are your plans?  For today, for tomorrow, for spring.

Timmy, our Parson Russell Terrier, also did a lot of work in the garden.  At the beginning of my weeding, Timmy was in a fenced-in area of our yard .  My husband was doing some work with a chain saw and I didn’t want Timmy near him.  Timmy was watching me with interest.  Eventually he started complaining and moaning.  He is quite a talker!  Once my husband was finished with the chain saw we let Timmy out and he ran right into the garden to help.  Digging is a new-found passion for him.  My children encourage him, but I don’t know if that’s a good idea.  My daughter and youngest son have a small container moss garden on our patio and we discovered it all dug up a few days ago.  I wonder who is to blame?!  But, anyway, Timmy joined me and got to work digging.  I love that dog.

I have never been ambitious enough to try a fall vegetable planting so this is a first for me!  I have been told that Arugula should do well in the cooler weather.  I am also going to try growing some Lettuce and Swiss Chard.  My spring crop of Lettuce and Arugula did wonderfully, but the Swiss Chard did horribly.  Very few plants came up.  It wasn’t even enough for one side dish for us.

Do you plant a fall vegetable crop?  What do you find does well?
