Crochet Heart: Step-By-Step Instructions

Do you want to make my crochet hearts, but you’re having problems? Here’s a step by step guide! It’s full of photos and hopefully it will demystify the strangeness of my heart. Not that my heart is strange. Wait. That sounds weird. Oh, and not my heart…my crochet heart! Never mind, just go ahead and make some hearts! My actual pattern is here.

Photo 1: A slip knot on the hook.

Photo 2: Two chains done.

Photo 3:Visual of 2nd chain from hook, where you are going to put the hook to do the six single crochets.

Photo 4: Hook is now in 2nd chain from hook.

Photo 5: Six sc's are now done in the 2nd ch from hook.

Photo 6: Hook is now in the first of of the sc's of previous round.

Photo 7: Completed is 2 sc's in each of the next 5 sc's of the previous round.

Photo 8: Chain 1 done.

Photo 9: 2 dc's now done in the next sc (This is the bottom of the heart.)

Photo 10: 2 sc's are now done in the next sc.

Photo 11: 1 sc is now done in the next sc.

Photo 12: 1 hdc and 4 dc's are now done in the next sc. (This is one of the top bumps of the heart.)

Photo 13: 1 sc is now done in the next sc.

Photo 14: A slip stitch is now done in the next sc.

Photo 15: 1 sc is now done in the next sc.

Photo 16: 3 dc's and 1 hdc are now done in the next sc. (This forms the other top bump of the heart.)

Photo 17: 1 sc now done in the next sc.

Photo 18: A slip stitch is now done in the next sc.

Photo 19: Finished off! Yarn is cut with long tail for weaving into back.

Photo 20: View of the back. Yarn ends need to be weaved in!

Free Crochet Heart Pattern

I had to create a crochet heart pattern! I’m all about quick and easy with my patterns and this one is just that! It’s one continuous spiral of crocheting, you can make up a bunch of them really quickly and you can give them out to anyone you want to show a little extra love to! Which leads me to…

Crochet Heart Pattern

Size: Hearts made with worsted weight yarn approximately 2 1/2 inches wide, 2 inches tall. Hearts made with crochet thread approximately 1 inch wide, 1 inch tall.

Materials:

I used Red Heart Super Saver assorted colors and Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread in Size 10 assorted colors
Size G Hook for Red Heart yarn and Size 5, 1.7mm hook for crochet thread

Gauge: Not important

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet, ch = chain, st = stitch, sl st = slip stitch, dc = double crochet, hdc = half double crochet

Notes: This pattern is worked in one continuous round. A round is worked in a continuous spiral, do not join, do not turn. The pattern might not seem to make sense as you are working, but keep going! It will be a heart when you’re finished!

Start with a ch 2
Do 6 sc in the 2nd ch from hook (Remember, don’t join or turn, just keep going in the same spiral throughout the entire list of instructions!)
Do 2 sc in each of the next 5 sc, ch 1
Do 2 dc in the next sc
Do 2 sc in the next sc
Do 1 sc in the next sc
Do 1 hdc, 4 dc in the next sc
Do 1 sc in the next sc
Do sl st in the next sc
Do 1 sc in the next sc
Do 3 dc, 1 hdc in the next sc
Do 1 sc in the next sc
Do sl st in the next sc
Cut yarn or thread and finish off
Weave in yarn or thread ends

Free Tiny Ornaments and Star Crochet Patterns

Yesterday my free crochet Christmas tree pattern post got pretty long, so I’m posting the extremely simple patterns for the ornaments and the star today!

Round Christmas Tree Ornaments

Size: Approximately 1/2 inch diameter

Materials:

Size 10 crochet thread. I used Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread in Red.
Crochet Hook – Size US 5 1.7mm

Gauge: Not important

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet, ch = chain, st = stitch, sl st = slip stitch

Notes: Rounds are worked in continuous spirals, do not join. Do not turn at the end of each round.

Leaving a beginning tail long enough to tie a knot or tie a bow, ch 2
Round one, do 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook
Round two, do 2 sc in each sc – 10, then do a slip stitch in next sc
Finish off, leaving yarn end long enough to tie a knot or tie a bow.

On one tree I tied the ornaments on with a double knot. On the other tree I made a tiny bow to tie them on.

Christmas Tree Star

Size: Approximately 3/4 inch diameter

Materials:

Size 10 crochet thread. I used Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread in Yellow.
Crochet Hook – Size US 5 1.7mm

Gauge: Not important

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet, ch = chain, st = stitch, sl st = slip stitch

Leaving a beginning tail long enough to tie a knot
ch 5, then sl st in 5th ch from hook – first “point” of the star is made
Repeat step 2 four more times, making four more “points” for your star
sl st in the first ch of step 2 to form your star.
Finish off, leaving yarn end long enough to tie a knot.

Free Crochet Christmas Tree Pattern

As I was making one of my crochet pine cones, I got an idea! Why not make a few pattern adjustments, flip it upside down, and…a pine cone becomes a Christmas tree!!! On the first tree I made I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn and on the second tree, I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream. The tree made with the Red Heart yarn came out taller and more sturdy that the one made with the Lily yarn, but I like them both!

Here is the pattern for the Christmas Tree. I’ll post the extremely simple patterns for the ornaments and the star tomorrow, December 4, 2009!

Christmas Tree

Size: approximately 3 1/2 inches (varies depending on yarn used)

Materials:

I used Red Heart Super Saver Green for one tree. I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Dark Pine for another tree.
Size G Hook

Gauge: Not important

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet, ch = chain, st = stitch, sl st = slip stitch, dc = double crochet

Ch 22
*dc in 3rd ch from hook, ch 4, sl st in first chain of the ch 4 you just did* Repeat this step 3 more times in the same “3rd ch from hook” stitch.
Repeat step 2 in each of the remaining chains of the original ch 22.
At the end of the last dc in the last ch don’t do the ch 4 or sl st. Just finish off after the last dc. Weave in yarn ends.

As you work you will be creating a spiral. The spiral becomes a Christmas Tree!

Free Pilgrim Hat Crochet Pattern

These little pilgrim hats are so quick and easy to make that you can make at bunch really quickly! I think these would be really cute place markers at your Thanksgiving table!

Crochet Pilgrim Hat

Size: Approximately 2 inches tall

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver, Color: Black
Worsted weight yarn. Small amount of Gold or Yellow. I used gold.
Stitch marker (I use a small piece of a contrasting color of yarn)
Crochet Hook – Size G

Gauge: Not important

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet, ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch, sc inc = single crochet increase.

Notes: This hat is made in rounds. Rounds are worked in continuous spirals, do not join. Do not turn at the end of each round.

Hat

chain 2.
8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Mark first st for beginning of round and move marker up for each round.
2 sc in each sc around – 16 sc.
In back loops only, 1 sc in each sc around – 16 sc.
Working in both loops again, 1 sc in each sc around for 4 rounds – 16 sc in each round.
In front loops only, 1 sc in each sc around – 16 sc.
Working in both loops again, *sc inc, 1 sc in next sc* around – 24 sc.
*sc inc, 1 sc in next 2 sc* around – 32 sc.
Sl St.
Finish off and weave in yarn ends.

Belt – to go around Hat (The belt is not worked in rounds.)

Ch 21 (Depending on your gauge you may have to chain more or less. Make the chain long enough to go around the hat as shown in the photos.)
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each chain.
Finish off leaving a yarn tail long enough to sew belt onto hat.
Using a small amount of gold or yellow yarn, sew a buckle onto the middle of the belt by making a rectangle with straight stitches. I knotted the gold yarn and hid the yarn ends in the belt.

Assembly

Sew the belt onto the hat with the yarn ends.

You are finished!

Crochet Pine Cones

Last year I posted a free crochet pine cone pattern. Here is a photo!

Recently I received a question about the pine cone, so I thought it would be helpful to post a little bit of explanation here.

Commenter Chrissy asked: “Hello, I just love your pine cone but I tried the pattern and mine does not come to a point at the bottom. My top and bottom look the same. Can you please help? I want to make these for Christmas. Thanks so much!”

Chrissy, thank you for your question!

I hadn’t made a pine cone since last year, so I got out my pattern and grabbed some light blue Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight yarn that was handy and made one to remind myself of how the pattern works. It didn’t come out as nicely as the pine cones I made last year. It seemed too loose. (Very odd, because I also used a Red Heart Super Saver yarn on my pine cones last year, but it was a different color.) Then I made one in an off-white color of yarn that I had gotten from a bargain bin. It was also worsted weight, but seemed to be a tiny bit thicker than the blue Red Heart. It made a difference. The pine cone held it’s shape much better with the slightly (and I mean very slightly!) thicker yarn. My advice is to not use a yarn that is too thin or too soft. If you do use a soft or thin yarn, it might work out if you go down in hook size, although I didn’t try this myself.

Here are my experimental pine cones. The white pine cone that uses the slightly thicker yarn has a nicer cone shape than the blue one made with thinner yarn.

Also, I must say that I am really impressed by people that are preparing for Christmas now! I can not wrap my mind around the fact that it is just a little more than two months away. I know that time will go by so quickly! Happy Crocheting and Happy Tuesday!

Free Crochet Air Mattress

I know, crochet and air mattress don’t seem like they go together! But, if the air mattress is for your crochet monkey or your crochet monkey two, it’s a perfect match!

Obviously this is not for use in water, but your crochet monkey doesn’t want to get wet anyway, does she? Maybe you can make her a little blanket and she can use it for camping!

Size: Approximately 8 inches long, 3 1/2 inches wide

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver, Color: Shocking Pink
Stitch marker (I use a small piece of a contrasting color of yarn)
Crochet Hook – Size G
Fiberfill Stuffing

Gauge: Not important

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet, ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch

Notes: The Tubes are made in rounds. Rounds are worked in continuous spirals, do not join. Do not turn at the end of each round.

Tubes (worked in rounds) – Make 3

chain 2.
8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Mark first st for beginning of round and move marker up for each round.
8 sc in each sc around for 20 more rounds – 8 sc. in each round
Sl st
Finish each tube off leaving a long tail for sewing the three tubes together.
Stuff with fiberfill. You can use the eraser end of a pencil or a dowel to push the stuffing all the way to the end.

Air Mattress Pillow

Chain 12, turn
sc in 2nd ch from hook and in the rest of the sc’s across, ch 1, turn – 12 (includes the ch 1) Do this for 15 rows.
Fold the rectangle you just crocheted in half holding the top and bottom together and sc the top and bottom together – 11
Finish off leaving a tail long enough to sew one side of the pillow together.
Sew one side of the pillow together. This leaves one side open.
Stuff the pillow with fiberfill.
Sew remaining side closed so that the stuffed pillow is now completely closed.

Why is this monkey wearing a knitted sweater during the summer?

Assembly

Sew the three tubes together.
Sew the pillow to the tubes, closing the tubes as you sew them to the pillow.

You are finished!

Free Crochet Bracelet Pattern

Before I get to the pattern, I must announce the next Pet Parade! ELK of red or gray depends on the day and I will be holding our second Pet Parade next Wednesday, May 27, 2009! Our thought is to hold a Pet Parade several times a year, probably on the last Wednesday of the month, in the months that have 31 days. So, May has 31 days, the 27th is the last Wednesday before the end of May, that means…Pet Parade! Is that confusing? It sounds confusing, but really it’s not. Don’t worry, we will announce when a parade is coming so you won’t miss out!

Blue and Brown Crochet Thread

I have worked a little with crochet thread and I love the results! I have made tiny crochet hearts with crochet thread and I started making tiny bears with the thread. But, boo on me, I never finished the bears. They are on my list of, “Someday I’ll finish that.” Do you have a list like that?

My 13 year old daughter likes wearing bracelets and loves handmade things, so she asked me to crochet her a bracelet. I have been in a crochet slump lately and this was just the thing to pull me out of it!

Crochet Bracelet

My Girl’s Crochet Bracelet

Size: Approximately 1-1/2 inches wide, make it as long as you need it.

Materials:

Two colors of size 10 crochet thread. I used Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread in Fudge Brown and blue (I don’t remember which blue and I don’t have the wrapper anymore, I think it is either Aqua or Parakeet)
Crochet Hook – Size US 2/2.2mm

Gauge: Not important

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet, ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch, yo = yarn over

Notes: This pattern is worked with two strands of crochet thread held together throughout.

How to make a popcorn: In a single crochet, *yarn over, draw up a loop (in this pattern since we are using two strands of thread held together, you are drawing up both strands, so each loop you draw up consists of two strands)* three times, then yo and draw this through all the loops on your hook. Popcorn made!

Popcorn stitch made

Pattern:

chain 8.
Turn. sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 7
Turn. ch 1, 1 sc in 1st sc, make a popcorn in the next sc, sc in each of the next 2 sc, make a popcorn in the next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc – 7 (not counting the chain stitch)
Turn. ch 1, 1 sc in each of the stitches across – 7 (not counting the chain stitch)
Turn. ch 1, 1 sc in the first two sc, make a popcorn, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc, make a popcorn, sc – 7 (not counting the chain stitch)
Turn. ch 1, 1 sc in each of the stitches across – 7 (not counting the chain stitch)
Continue until your bracelet is the correct length. The thread has some give, so just be sure to make it large enough to slide over your hand, but not so big that it will fall off.
Make your last row be a row of sc’s.
Fold your bracelet in half, inside out, matching up both ends.
Slip stitch to close the bracelet. Finish off and weave in the ends. (I finished with some good tight knots to keep the bracelet from coming undone.)

Free Pansy Crochet Pattern

It is chilly, cloudy and windy here. We don’t have any flowers around my neighborhood yet and I am so desperate for spring! Here is a really easy and quick crochet pattern for making your own flowers!

Crochet Pansy

Size: Approximately 3 inches

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn. I used a medium purple for the petals and yellow for the center of the flower.
Crochet Hook – Size G

Gauge: Not important

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet, ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch, tr = triple crochet

Back Petals

With purple, chain 2.
5 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st.
ch 3
tr in same st as you joined in
2 tr in next st
ch 3
sl st in same st as you did the 2 tr’s in. (First petal is now formed.)
*ch 3, tr in next st, 2 tr in next st, ch3, sl st in same st as you did the 2 tr’s in.* twice, finish off (This forms the 2nd and 3rd petals.)

Front Petals

With yellow, chain 2.
5 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. Finish off.
Join purple onto one of the yellow sc’s with a sl st
*ch3, tr in the same st as you joined in, 2 tr in the next st, ch 3, sl st in same st as the st as you did the 2 tr’s in. *(This forms the first petal.)
sl st in the next 3 st
Repeat step 4 to form the second petal.
sl st into the first st where you joined the purple yarn to the yellow.
Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing front and back petals together.

Assembly

Sew front petals to back petals. That’s it!
