The rules are:

1) go to your photo folders,

2) post the 6th picture in the folder,

3) tell the story about the picture and then

4) tag 6 bloggers to do the same.

Well, because I have videos that were  made with my point and shoot camera mixed in with my photos, when I went to my sixth folder and to the sixth picture, it turned out to be one of those extremely short video clips!  My youngest son made it when he was six years old.  He was using a silly voice, as six year old boys often do!  I don’t know what he was aiming the camera at because there is no picture, only audio!  Silly kid!

Out of the three of my children, my youngest son is the only one that has voiced any more than a passing interest in photography.  So far, at least.  Things change so quickly with kids, you never know!  He has given me surprises when I download photos from my point and shoot camera and has recently expressed interest in my dslr camera.  One day this week when he got home from school he saw that I had some fruit and veggies set up for photographing.  He asked if he could do a set up and photograph it.  “Sure!” I said gleefully!  It was so cool watching him set up the food.  He really got into it and he moved some things off of the counter when he noticed they were in his shots.  I left the camera on aperture priority and showed him how to change the aperture.  I showed him how to get into the camera settings and he tried black and whites, natural color and vivid color.  He adjusted white balance and zoomed in and out.  Then he got to somewhere in the camera that I’ve never been and wanted to change things!  That’s where I drew the line.  Yikes!  I think I have to learn more about my camera so I don’t have to be afraid of him experimenting.  I know that’s the best way to learn.

When he was finished photographing, I told him to download Picasa so he could edit his photos.  I think it’s a great program.  It’s really easy to use and perfect for a kid to mess around with and be artistic with their photos.  Then it was time to transfer the photos to his computer.  This is where the self-induced aggravation began.  We installed the camera program, hooked up the camera to the computer by USB and got the message DEVICE NOT READY.  What?  Why isn’t it ready?!  We turned the camera off and on again, we disconnected and reconnected, we restarted the computer twice.  Ahhhhhhhh! I told him I would try to figure it out today while he was at school.  Well, guess what, I did figure it out.  What a dummy I can be!  The compact flash card was NOT. IN. THE. CAMERA.  It was plugged into my computer!  I had transferred some photos to my computer and forgotten to put the flash card back into the camera!

So, when he gets home today, he will be able to edit his photos.  I’ll ask him pick some for me to show you guys.  I think he’ll be really proud of his work and want to show it!

I’ll start with the history before the embarrassment.  Growing up I had lots and lots of cousins on both sides of the family.  I saw some of my cousins on my mom’s side of the family fairly often.  We didn’t see my dad’s side of the family much, except for one of his sisters (my aunt) and her family.  They lived one street up from me, and my cousin Lisa was just a little older than me.  We were best friends during childhood.  We played together almost every day.  We had sleepovers and trick-or-treated together. We played Barbies and dolls and house.  And, we hid behind the bushes of a neighbor’s house when my dad’s friend (female) came to visit my mom one day. (That’s another story for another time.)  We were totally best friends.

Our friendship changed very quickly when Lisa began middle school.  I was one year behind her in school.  When she started middle school and I was still in elementary school, she became too grown up to be friends with me.  It was really hard on me.  As I’ve mentioned before I was (and still am) shy and did not make friends easily.  After that we saw each other very rarely and then once we were in our teens we never saw each other at all any more.

Zoom ahead to me being thirty years old.  One of my cousins on my dad’s side of the family had a huge family cookout/reunion.  My husband and I went with our 5 month old son.  During the festivities I saw my uncle (Lisa’s dad).  There was someone I didn’t know sitting next to him.  I went over to say hi and ask how he was doing and also, “How is Lisa?”  He looked at the woman sitting next to him (the one I didn’t know) and said something.  I don’t remember what his words were because at that moment I realized that the woman, the stranger, WAS. MY. COUSIN.  The girl that I spent almost every waking moment with through early childhood!  What an idiot I felt like!  I don’t know what I said.  I think something really lame, like, oh, you’ve changed so much, how are you?  And then I looked for a rock to crawl under.
