Red Ribbon Week

Have you heard of Red Ribbon Week?  If you have school age children in the United States, you probably have.  Red Ribbon Week officially goes from October 23rd to October 31st each year.  Red Ribbon Week honors Enrique (Kiki) Camarena’s memory.  He was a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent, who at the age of 37, was tortured and murdered while investigating a major drug cartel in Mexico.  You can read about him here.  The thing that really touches my heart as a mother is that when he decided to join the US DEA, his mom tried to talk him out of it.  He told her, “I’m only one person, but I want to make a difference.”

We are observing Red Ribbon Week in our little town this week.  There are ribbons all over town and our children are receiving the message to stay substance free.  The message is toned down at the lower grades to be a make healthy choices message.  What is very odd to me is that although our grades 3, 4 and 5 children learn about substance abuse in their health classes, we are not allowed, by a decision our Superintendent of Schools, to mention the true message of Red Ribbon Week to those children.  The consensus at a meeting I attended yesterday was that even though we would prefer it wasn’t true, our young children do know about drug abuse and we should be reinforcing a substance free message before they reach middle school.  What are your thoughts?

Won’t you join me on one of these days during Red Ribbon Week to wear something red and to take a moment to be thankful for Agent Camarena and all the men and women like him that risk their lives every day to make the world safer? And to say a little prayer for their moms, too?

So touching Gayle. And the fact that you ask for prayers for their mothers is even more so.

I think ALL the kids should be told exactly what Red Ribbon week is about.

I don’t have kids, but it seems to me that kids today are way too coddled and protected. They need to learn and understand what’s going on in the world around them, and how to deal with things that will come up along the way as they grow up. Teaching them when they’re young that drugs aren’t cool is going to benefit them a lot more than sugar-coating the problem till they’re older.

That’s just my humble opinion, anyway :-)

Just this week, there was a massive raid of the Mexican drug cartel, La Familia by the feds. I had never heard of Red Ribbon week so thanks for teaching me something new.
