Monday Memories: The Twenty-seventh!

September 6th, 2009 · 8 Comments

I went to the library a few days ago.  I saw two elderly ladies walking together.   They walked arm in arm.  I saw a man and a woman, maybe in their 70’s, walking, holding hands. Happiness surrounded these people.  It got me thinking about holding my mom’s hand when I was a little girl.  How good that felt.  So comfortable, so safe, so protected.  This lead me to the following memory, which I think of from time to time. It is just a tiny little snippet of  my life, but it is so special to me.  I have mentioned that I didn’t have the perfect father-daughter relationship.  Maybe that is why this is such a special memory.  I remember going with my mom and dad to visit some past neighbors of ours that had moved away.  Their new home wasn’t far away, probably only 20 minutes from our home.  We would only visit rarely.  I only really have a clear memory of one visit.  We stayed late, past my bedtime.  Their children had already gone to bed.  I was so tired and my dad held me as I fell asleep.  With my ear against his chest I fell asleep listening to the rumbling of his deep voice.  I felt so warm, so safe, so protected.  If he was still alive now I would tell him how special this memory is to me.  This is a yet another reminder to me that the most precious moments of life are often very tiny moments, a snuggle, a touch, a smile, holding hands.

Now it’s your turn!  What are you remembering today?  If you have something to share with us today, leave a link to your blog post or photo in Mr. Linky.  If you don’t have a blog, tell us about a memory in the comment section.  I want to hear from everybody!  (If Mr. Linky  isn’t working, you can put your link in the comments section.)  Please remember to:

  • Leave a link to the specific blog post, not to your general blog address, to make it easier for people to find your memory post.
  • Make sure your link works and that it goes to your specific memory post.
  • Put a link back to here in your post so that your readers can come and read about everyone’s memories!
  • Visit the other participants and please leave comments on their posts!  We all love comments!
  • Enjoy the party and come back next week for Monday Memories: The Twenty-eighth!

What a sweet memory. I didn’t have a relationship with my dad either, but my step-dad was awesome. Even now, if something is bothering me, just hearing his voice will make me cry.

My post today includes a picture of my Mom holding my brother. We were at the peace rally in Lincoln Park Chicago during the Democratic Nat’l Convention of 1969. I have very fond memories of both my parents standing up for what they believed in …. and holding us close in their hearts as they did so.
