Rug Shopping, Help!

January 23rd, 2009 · 23 Comments

Rug 1

It’s Hooked on Friday at Hooked on Houses, and today I’m hooked on shopping for a rug!  I must clarify,  I am a terrible shopper.  Especially for something that I will see every day for (hopefully) many years.  It’s so hard to make up my mind.  And then of course, the rugs that are my favorites are the expensive ones!

Rug 2

Rug 2

I am looking for a rug to go into our family room.  The room is a little dark already, with a dark wide plank wood floor and dark paneling.  Someday, we want to take down the paneling and lighten up the room with lighter walls.  The room has a fireplace with a wood stove insert and a sliding glass door that leads to our backyard.  Wood is carried in this way to go into the wood stove and this is the way our dogs go in and out, so sometimes there are wet and dirty paws that will be walking on the rug.

Rug 3

As you can see by my choices, I like Southwest decor!

Rug 4

What do you think?  Should I go with something dark to hide paw prints?  Should I go lighter, to brighten up the room?  What will it be, Rug #1, Rug #2, Rug #3 or Rug #4.  (I feel like Monty Hall!)

Any other ideas?  I really need some advice!

Don’t forget to check back on Monday, Jan. 26th for my very first giveaway!

Hmmm…I think rug 3. If you are trying to lighten up the room that one would help

I have to vote for rug #3, too. Love it!

I go for the lightest one Gayle…3 it is!

I love Rug #3, and #4, in that order. I love brights. I’m also rug shopping, but I think this is my final choice:
We’re painting the walls a very muted Tiffany’s box blue/aqua. The bottom of the walls are ivory, and I’m painting ivy and butterflies along the border by hand. I can’t wait to see it all finished! It literally took me years to get up the courage to do this room – so much money and time, and in the end, what if I don’t really love it?!
Your Southwest theme sounds very nice!

Hi donna, Julia, ELK and Debbie!

Hmmm, 3 is definitely the favorite!

Debbie, the room you’re doing over sounds like it’s going to be beautiful! What a pretty rug you’ve chosen!

I like number 4! It seems like it would be dark enough to hide the paw prints! :-)

Drawn to #3 too, and then to #4. Have Fun!

  • 8 Gayle // Jan 24, 2009 at 11:35 am

    Hi Kim and lmerie!

I am a little worried about #3 showing paw prints too much and #4 might hide them better. I do clean, but I don’t want to be cleaning a rug on a daily basis! This is such a tough decision!

I love light rugs…however I am at a loss for what to do when they get dirty!
I would pick #1 because I think is has a light look to it for some reason.

I like number one. I appreciate the simplicity of it and the neutral colors.

By the way, I grew up in a house that had a room covered in wood. One day it was all taken down and it was such a huge, welcome difference.

    Hi Miz B!
Yes, the cleaning is a big consideration.

    Hi Stephanie!
I really would like to get the paneling off of the walls. I think it would make a huge difference. The family room (with the paneling) is open to our dining area and I think it even darkens the dining area even though I have light yellow on the walls in there.

Rug #3. I could just see the room you described and in my mind’s eye that’s the perfect carpet…, hope to see a picture once it’s in there!

    Hi Maya@C-C!

I think I need to convince my husband that it’s not too big a job to remove the dark paneling!

I too like #3, but I also like number 1. I think it would hide paw prints better! Great rugs!

Well, I like #3, and I see that everyone else does too. However, I can see that it might be a problem with muddy footprints. So I think I might go with #1.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I like #1 the best. My mom has a rug – off white with blue checkers and red apples on it. They also have a dog, and the dog sleeps in the room where the rug is, so the dog spends quite a bit of time lying/walking on the rug. She decided to have it cleaned. It would have cost as much to have it cleaned as she paid for the rug! (Needless to say, she did it herself.) I say #1 is a good balance of light to help brighten the room and is also dark enough that any paw prints (or other marks) would be easily hidden until you can give it a thorough cleaning.

Can’t wait to see what you pick! 😀

    Hi Rachel!

The worry about doggy mess got to me and we bought a darker rug locally this weekend. I’ll show it in a post this week!
