Who’s Been In Our Garden?

October 6th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Look what we have in our perennial flower garden!

Is this cool, or what?!  Have you seen one before?  I hadn’t until last fall.

It’s a Praying Mantis egg case!

Last fall my guy was cleaning out our perennial flower garden when he came upon a very strange looking egg case.  He took the flower stem that the egg case was on and put it into our garage for the winter.  He hunted around on the internet and discovered that it was a Praying Mantis egg case.  In the spring he put the egg case back into the garden, and in June we had about 14 of these…

These insects are so neat!  I love the way they turn their head and look at you when you get close to them.

Here’s what they looked like in August.

This gal I photographed in September 2007.  I wonder if she is the grandmother of this year’s egg case babies?!

    Hi Anna b-bonkers!

Yes, I’m so glad my husband was observant enough to find the first egg case last fall and then the one pictured this year!
