Our Gorgeous Pool. Hah!

September 23rd, 2008 · 6 Comments

As I mentioned before, we have lived in our house for thirteen years.  Things are starting to fall apart.  Some things more so than others.  Take for example, our money pit pool.

It is great to have a pool.  My children learned how to swim when they were little.  We have had parties and cookouts and it’s a great thing to have on these occasions.  It’s great for exercise.  I don’t know how to swim, but during the summer my daughter and I do all kinds of pool exercising together.

It’s the setting for the first Stan and Floss Adventure!

It is also expensive to have a pool, but we figure, we almost never go out to movies, or out for dinner, or out for any entertainment!  We don’t send the kids to camp during the summer.  We only go on one vacation a year.  The vacation usually only lasts about 4 days.  So, the pool is a large part of our summer fun.

The pool has a liner that we replaced about 8 years ago.  Over the past few years the liner has developed leaks, which my husband does his best to repair.  One of those repairs ended in my calling 911.  My guy had a patch with a big glob of underwater glue on it.  When he went underwater with the patch, the glue floated off of the patch to the surface of the water.  When he stood up, the glue attached itself to his skin.  Yipes!  It instantly started burning him.  He ran to the shower, and frantically tried to rinse it off.  The glue fumes started making him feel dizzy, I called 911, the kids were scared.  Before the EMT arrived (they sure seem to take a long time when you’re terrified) my husband figured out that he needed the shower water to be COLD (I had turned the water to warm for him.)  The cold water stopped the burning and the fumes and he was able to peel the glue off.  By the time the EMT arrived, the crisis was over.  Nothing like an exciting Labor Day weekend!

So, anyway, when my guy opened the pool this year it was obvious that there was a leak that was not small.  We had to keep the garden hose running in the pool constantly to keep up with the leak.  It’s a good thing we have a very good well.  My husband searched and searched.  No luck finding the leak.  We froze in the pool.  Nobody wanted to swim/freeze.  Well water = cold!  Finally, near the end of August, my guy found the leak!  Turns out that where the liner meets the steps, under the plastic joiner strip, there was a large tear.

So here’s our pool now:

Ack!  It’s almost in the same category as the Wishing Well.  Good thing cement doesn’t make good kindling.

Do you have any eyesores around your house?

No pool here. But if we did have one, I’m pretty sure it would probably look the same. :)

    Hi Liz!

I sure am hoping it doesn’t look this way for long, or at least that it’s back up and running for next summer!
