Children Arguing, Need Advice Now!

August 7th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Dear Reader,

I need some advice.  What do you do when your twelve year old daughter and ten year old son get into a bickering phase?  Of course this is a totally hypothetical situation; my ten and twelve year old children bickered all day yesterday never bicker.  But, hypothetically speaking, what if they get into a mood where they argue over nearly everything?

Perhaps they might argue over which yogurt flavor is better, which of them touched the other’s couch cushion first, or over which of the two of them is funnier.  They might even argue about whether the Brown Sugar Chewies* that a certain ten year old made are good or yucky, and whose turn it is to stay up a little later, and whose turn it is to get the fireflies we caught in their room all night, and which one of them brushed teeth first last night (so they get to go second tonight) and on and on and on.

Okay, so maybe this does happen in my house!  It is so hard to ignore, but I know that it is a no-win situation if I try to referee.  Got any advice?

*Photos of the delicious Brown Sugar Chewies tomorrow, remind me!

:) My brother (5 years younger) and I fought ALL THE TIME. Constantly. About everything. “He’s breathing on me!” I would whine. I remember often being annoyed with my mother because she ignored us. Ha!

But, when it was out of control, we would be punished for it – I think more for the sanity of my mother than to make us get along. “One more word and no TV tonight.” “One more word and no friends tomorrow.” Etc.

As to arguing over who brushed their teeth first last night… Make a chart! My brother and I fought over who would get to sit in the middle row of the van (we certainly couldn’t sit there together, no way). So my mom gave us days – Mon/Wed/Fri, was for my brother, Tues/Thurs/Sat was for me. Sunday was a day of rest. :)

    Good luck!
